It was a wonderful evening for the audience with author Emma Craigie. Through the back doors of a busy Streatham pub we were greeted by the scintillating hostess Lisa Watson;and ushered into a cozy little haven transformed perfectly for the event. There was period music from an original gramophone, tea in vintage cups and family photos from the 1940s (and what a family…!). Emma Craigie herself was an engaging and energetic speaker full of a storyteller’s flare and passion. Her background research for her book;’Chocolate Cake with Hitler’¬†was fascinating and further complemented with archive photos of the Goebbels family that were truly haunting. For anyone who may think that they have heard enough of stories from the war, this talk was another reminder of how this complicated, terrible period of history and its players continue to resonate today. The room was astounded as Emma detailed the little known and complex details of Magda Goebbels’ personal life and we gasped audibly when Emma revealed that her own grandmother, during her duties during the war came across a young German prisoner of war later revealed to be Magda Goebbels’ first son. Emma fielded questions about her experience as a writer with a young family and has perhaps lit a few fires as she spoke about her hunger to work, to create and to concentrate her mind while in the midst of raising children. In fact this is what made this evening such a success as it has fed our intellect, our curiosity and fueled discussion! We look forward to another event of such inspiration, interest and class.
